Thank you for booking on the above course which will take place in the Brecon Beacons National Park. We will meet at the Llwyn Onn Reservoir Dam (GR S0 009112) at 5.30PM before driving a short distance to begin the evening and will aim to be out for around 3-4 hours. To reach the meeting point, take the A470 and, if approaching from the south, around 3km after crossing the roundabout junction with the A465, take a left turn signposted Cwm Cadlan. Cross the reservoir over the dam and then park. If approaching from the north on the A470, you’ll see a sign for Garwnant Visitor Centre. Continue on the A470 but then take the next right and cross the reservoir as above.
Clothing and equipment
Please ensure that you are adequately equipped for a winter’s evening of walking in the mountains. As a minimum you should have:
• Fully waterproof jacket and over trousers with taped seams.
• Walking boots with ankle protection. Waterproof boots are preferable, as the ground underfoot will be uneven and may be boggy and damp.
• Small daysack, preferably with waterproof liner and/or rain cover.
• Snacks and water, 1 litre should suffice. You may also / alternatively wish to bring a flask with a hot drink.
• Warm hat and gloves
• Spare warm layer, e.g fleece top
• Headtorch and spare batteries
• Any personal medication you require
We recommend that the clothing you wear whilst walking is synthetic or wool, not cotton. This is because cotton absorbs both rain and sweat and quickly saps heat from the body, whilst other materials are better at drawing moisture away from the body.
We will be working on OS map OL12. We can provide map and a compass but if you would prefer to use your own you are welcome to do so. If you are missing any other items of equipment, please contact us as we may be able to lend these to you.
Medical / health issues
The evening may be physically demanding, involving walking over uneven and challenging terrain, possibly during poor weather conditions and for extended periods of time. If you have any pre-existing injuries, illnesses or medical conditions that may impact on your ability to participate fully, please inform us beforehand using the emergency contact and health information form provided so that we can adjust the course to meet your needs.
If you have any questions about the course content, equipment needed, health concerns or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact us before the course.
